Dear Friends and Neighbors:
As Council President of Woodmere Village, I could not be more excited that Cleveland has landed a major political convention. If the RNC accepts the recommendation, it is likely the Republicans will hold its party convention 10 miles from Woodmere Village. Officials of the Republican National Committee’s site selection team voted to recommend that the GOP hold its 2016 presidential nominating convention in Cleveland beginning on either June 28 or July 16.
I tweeted and posted on Facebook my jubilation as soon as the announcement was confirmed.
The convention is expected to bring more than 40,000 visitors to the city and infuse 200 to 300 million dollars into the region’s economy. What does that mean for Woodmere? We have eateries, specialty shops, and other attractions that will entice countless people to our Village.
As a former television reporter here in the Cleveland market, I know first-hand that the 15,000 journalist that will be covering the convention, are going to need feature stories and other feel-good pieces to complement convention coverage.
Not to mention, the people coming to Cleveland for the convention may have the influence to go back to their organizations and cities and share that Greater Cleveland is a great place to hold a convention. So in 2017, and beyond, there could be an influx of conventions and other activities coming to our region based on the experiences of the RNC. We also hope the Democrats find favor with Cleveland.
I look forward to working with Mayor Charles E. Smith, my Council colleagues, the Woodmere Village business community, and other interested groups to roll out the RED carpet to our Village when the GOP comes to town. Clearly, we have much to be proud of in Woodmere.
